... BERRY DELICIOUS ... |
July 12, 2008Arcticulates ®Focusing on Alaska's BeautyAuthor: K. Fields~ ~ Berry Delicious ~ ~It’s getting that time of year where the wild strawberries are ripe. You will see people all over Alaska crouching and crawling around the road sides and fields where the tiny berries grow in abundance. Even the tourists take some time to stop and pick these tasty little treats. Wild Strawberry Plant
Ripe wild Strawberries are bright red, juicy, and plentiful, though it still takes a while to pick them because they are so small. The biggest I’ve ever seen are the size of your thumb nail, but most are the size of your pinky nail. They may be small but they pack a whollop of flavor. I haven’t found a store brand strawberry yet, that can beat the flavor of these tiny wild ones. Tiny Wild Strawberry with Awesome Flavor
My Grandchildren and I go berry picking together, they eat all that they pick, but that's okay, because the fun is being together. It's fun to hear the really young ones, shouting "Wow! Look grandma! We found ton of them!" and they show me a half full paper cup.Which is a "ton" to them! It always surprises me, because I know it took a lot of restraint on their part not to eat them Tiny Splashes of Red in The Wild
Then we take the berries home and spread them out on clean bath towels and gently roll them across the towel with our fingers, the terry cloth picks off any dirt and leaves. Then we put them in a covered bowl and refrigerate while we gather some more. When all is said and done, sitting down with a bowl of fresh wild strawberries and whipped cream makes all the work worth while. Strawberries grow wild all over Alaska, they are the best near the end of June into the first couple weeks of July. Then our rainy season starts and the rain drops knock them off the plants and they get mushy. Wild Strawberry Patch
If you find a good batch of them, it really doesn’t take too long to pick a good size bowl full. That would be enough to make a dozen small jars of Jam, which make wonderful (Dare I say this word in July) Christmas gifts. Wild Strawberries are my second favorite wild berry in Alaska! Later...
