... THE CAT'S MEOW! ... |
October 28, 2008Arcticulates ®Focusing on Alaska's BeautyAuthor: K. Fields~ ~ The Cat's Meow! ~ ~Well... if this post isn't the Cat's Meow then I don't know what is... it is highlighted with some awesome photos of a wild cat that thrives in Alaska, called a Lynx. Lynx are very camera shy, so getting pictures of them in the wild, are not a streak of fur running away) is pretty impressive . I want to take a few minutes to introduce a fantastic photographer that lives here in Alaska. His name is Dwight Phillips. When you have seen more of my posts graced with some of his photos, of the wildlife and scenery in Alaska, you will understand exactly what I am talking about when I mention the beauty that he can capture with his camera. I am honored to be able to use some of his wonderful photos on Arcticulates. Lynx Crouched in The Trees
I think Dwight loves Alaska almost as much as I do. He travels around a big portion of Alaska with his job, and so has a chance to view things through his camera lens that I can only dream about. He is a avid fisherman, and his wonderful wife and children are his biggest fans when it comes to his awesome hobby! He was so amazed about having this chance to take these awesome pictures of a Lynx, whom seemed to just stick around and pose for him and he was unafraid as you can see by the photos. I wish you could have seen the look of pure delight on Dwight's face as he told the story of how blessed he was at seeing this beautiful wild cat, and being able to capture the moment in some photos too. Alaska Wildcat : LYNX
Lynx are very quiet when moving about, which is surprising because their feet are huge! Their feet can be as large as a man's hand with is fingers spread wide open. They do not have skin pads on the bottom of their feet either, it is all fur. I call them natural snowshoes. They have retractable claws, and those claws are long, and sharp, which with that large feet, they can walk across the snow easily which effectively aids their abilities to hunt. Plus! Their back legs are twice as long as their front legs which helps them to leap great distances and heights. Lynx Posing for Photographer
Lynx are usually nocturnal animals, which means they do most of their wanderings and hunting at night. It is rare to see them during the day, but it isn't impossible as I have seen a few lynx during the daylight hours at times. But of course always when I don't have a camera handy to prove it. They are also known by the cute little tufts of black fur they have on each ear. It has been said that they use those ear fur tufts like a domesticated cat uses it's whiskers, these tufts like whiskers are very sensitive to touch, so if the Lynx is about to enter any place that may be too small for his/her body, and the whiskers and ear tufts touch anything while entering, these very smart wildcats will not enter. Keeps them from entering and becoming trapped into a too small space, which would place them at the mercy of other animal predators that are hunting.
