~~~ ICY DESIGNS ~~~ |
December 26, 2008Arcticulates ®Focusing on Alaska's BeautyAuthor: K. Fields~~ Icy Designs ~~If you take a ride around North Pole, Alaska and the neighboring cities you might think that Ice Carving is a favorite winter past-time. There are ice sculptures in front of businesses, in the middle of the roundabouts, on lawns and along the highways... and there is a special park right next to the Santa Claus house that has some beautiful Ice sculptures called Christmas in Ice .I have been there several times and want to share these photos of some of the beautiful icy designs that someone with a wonderful imagination has carved out. I added the names of the artists that I know of... to some of the photos. Icy Robot
These designs are so awesome that I will have two separate posts for them, because I don't want the page to load too slowly for whoever is looking at them. I have linked them to a larger picture so that you can see some of the detail better, so just click on the photos for a larger view. I cannot even imagine standing outside in minus degrees weather working on ice carvings, but some people do just that, and I for one am so glad they do. Because I love looking at them because they really brighten up an otherwise dark winter's day. These ice carvings are not just little sit on the table designs, most of them are life size or larger and are so detailed it's unbelievable. Joseph, Mary And Baby Jesus
The beautiful ice carving of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus is so amazing, It must be at least 8 or 9 feet tall, and you can see the fine details on the flow of the gowns right down to the clay pots. Very nicely done and so beautiful with the blue lighting to illuminate the designs It was spitting snow when I took a couple of these photos, so you will see snowflakes here and there. It was so cold outside that my fingers were freezing inside my leather gloves. And I had to warm up the camera a couple of times because the buttons froze and wouldn't move. So it is hard for me to imagine someone outside in that kind of weather working on such detail in these ice blocks. Last Minute Juggle by World Champion Heather Brice
This bear carrying gifts design makes me think of the stories that I loved as a child in the Cat in the Hat series. I am not sure if that is what they were depicting in this design. Could be the Berenstein Bears too... I am not sure ... All I know is I see the pretty package bows, fuzz ball on the hat and candy cane sticking out of the stocking, and the cute little stuffed rabbit with the floppy ears and I wonder how did they do that? The Gift By North Pole Alaska's own Anita Tabor
This is the last of the photos on this post. If you would like to see more ice sculptures, see also: Icy Creations Later... See Also: Ice Sculpture Winners 2009
