Moose Marauders |
October 3, 2008Arcticulates ®Focusing on Alaska's BeautyAuthor: K. FieldsMoose MaraudersI left a few small cabbages out there, they weren't big enough to bother with and I knew the moose would love them. Plus there were some broccoli plants, peas plants that were wilted and dying from the cold. So they can scrounge around all the want! Ahh Ha! Caught in The Act!
As you can see by the photos it is still snowing. Most of the snow from the first snow storm melted by the next day, but it has been snowing steadily today. These moose are being very bold... as if they think the snowflakes can hide them... and are not even afraid of the camera man. Hey! Watch Out For The Peas' Trellis!
As you can also see in these photos... my scarecrow no longer scares them away. Hmmmmm.... Seems snow flying makes them braver because the scarecrow has kept them out of the garden almost all summer. Next summer I will have to hang some more long shiny pieces of cloth strips on that scarecrow along with some little wind chimes here and there, so it will be scary again. He looks kinda tired from guarding the garden this summer. It is against the law to shoot a moose on your property in Alaska. Unless you or someone else is about to be stomped to death... then maybe... but you have to prove it. You cannot hunt moose in Alaska unless you have a hunting license that has been issued in Alaska. There is a certain time of the year when moose hunting is allowed, and during what we locals call "moose hunting season" which when that starts there are all kinds of regulations that you have to follow, and believe me they are very strict about it. For instance: the antlers have to be a certain size with a certain amount of tines, female moose are very seldom on the list, and baby moose... never. Scrounging Marauders in Alaska!
Here is a link that gives more information on the hunting regulations on antler size etc. etc. Identifying A Legal Moose in Antler Restricted Hunts In some areas the regulations are different then other areas, so when you are hunting, you better know where you are at, and what the rules are for that area or you could get some pretty hefty fines. There are what I call Secret Agent Super Spy Alaska Fish and Game Management everywhere and you will get caught. I find it amazing how many times I read in the paper every year, that are caught shooting the wrong size moose. Good thing the meat is salvaged and taken to one of Alaska's Charitable Organizations Food Bank of Alaska Scarecrows Are For The Birds!
So...these two young female marauding moose are off limits. Later... K Fields See also: Here Moosey! Moosey!
