Focusing on Alaska's Beauty

Aurora Borealis

The beautiful Aurora Borealis 'shows' during the long Alaskan nights are just about over for the winter season. Now Alaskan's are digging out the black-out curtains to darken bedrooms for the long sunny summer nights.

The Aurora Borealis are a natural phenomonen that appears every winter here in Alaska that everyone who lives here look forward too. This year we had some exceptional displays of lights spreading across the skies.

I would like to take this time to introduce Sebastian P. Saarloos, an up and coming photographer who already has a following for his beautiful photograhy.

For some reason in our area there seems to be mostly bright green color in the Northern Light displays. I have no idea why. In other areas there can be pinks, blues, reds, besides the common white shades. Green to me means "new" so I am happy with our beautiful displays of Aurora Borealis.

Here is a link from Wikipedia that has some amazing and interesting facts about 'Auroras'

I have tried to take pictures of the Northern Lights, but they never seem to be as beautiful as the real thing. And I know it can be done, just look at Sebastian's beautiful photos. So I have been studing up on how to do it, I have used this link for some pointers:

How to Photograph the Northern Lights

Maybe I can get this figured out.

It is always nice to read descriptions and studies of the Aurora Borealis. This past winter of 2011/12 we have had some major Solar Storms that have caused the Aurora Borealis to show up in many other places that normally do not have Aurora displays. Here is a link that explains 'Solar Storms' and the reaction we see with the Northern Lights displays.

Solar Storms and Aurora Borealis

"I experience a period of frightening clarity in those moments when nature is so beautiful. I am no longer sure of myself, and the paintings appear as in a dream." - Vincent Van Gogh

"It is the marriage of the soul with Nature that makes the intellect fruitful, and gives birth to imagination." - Henry David Thoreau

"The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be." - Anne Frank

"It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to. . . . The feeling for the things themselves, for reality, is more important than the feeling for pictures." - Vincent Van Gogh

In the meantime...as we say good-bye to Winter and the Aurora Borealis displays, and get ready to enjoy the beauty that Summer brings to Alaska, I will end this post with this quote: "Earth and sky.. are excellent school masters and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books" - John Lubbock

Later...
