Wednesday, July 2, 2008 ~ POCKETFUL OF POSIES ~ Wildflowers grows all through the wooded areas and along the roadsides, just about everywhere you look you will see these beautiful stalk type flowers.  They are called Arctic Lupine. The Arctic Lupine can grow up to 16 inches tall, with many large flower stalks. The flowers range from light bluish lavender to Dark bluish purple. Bluish Purple Arctic Lupine Photo by K. Fields They are very pretty, and hold up to being in a vase of water after being cut for a few days. They are at their prettiest in June and Early July and they have a very pleasant odor! Caution: They are very poisonous, especially the seed. Do not Eat! Light Bluish Lavender Arctic Lupine Photo by K.Fields Another Beautiful, yet delicate looking wildflower that grows rampant in the summer here in Alaska is the Wild Iris, or known to some as Blue Flag. It can grow up to 24 inches tall, the flower can be as big as 4 inches. The colors range from blue to deep purple, rarely there is some white, they are at thier prettiest during the months of June and July. Wildflower Wild Iris Photo by K. Fields They have broad, thin sword like leaves, and the flowers top off a thick long flower stalk, their seed pods are large and full of seeds. Caution: These are another poisonous plant, they will cause vomiting. Do not Eat! Fields of Wild Iris Photo by K. Fields We have these pretty little flowers growing wild everywhere, especially along the roadsides. They are called Fringed Fleabane. They grow up to 18 inches tall, and have flowers that range from white to light purple in color. They are part of the Aster family. Wildflower Fringed Fleabane Photo by K. Fields A really pretty ground cover plant that covers the ground in the forested areas has several different names. It is called Dwarf Dogwood, Bunchberry, Canadian Dwarf Cornel, and we call it "Bear Berry" plants. It is a shrub that grows right next to the ground, and is covered in pretty little white flowers in late June and July. Ground Covering Wildflower Dogwood Photo by K. Fields In the Fall these plants will produce berries, reddish orange in color, they are edible, but to me they have no taste and are mealy.  The plants turn a reddish orange color in the Fall, blanketing the woody areas in vibrant colors Which is why we call them Bear Berry Plants.
